Design Analysis and Design Synthesis are two of the core classes offered at the Institute of Design. Design Analysis focuses on a methods based approach for unraveling a complex design problem into comprehensible and actionable parts. Design Synthesis focuses on methods that bring rigor and repeatability to the task of designing novel solutions that fit together into larger systems. As always, multidiscplinary teams are leveraged to find the most complete solutions. My analysis team consisted of myself, Jim Heys, Lise Lynam and Soo Paik (the synthesis team included just myself, Jim and Lise). Lise is an athlete and hockey fan who played the sport in college. Her passion for the game inspired us to take on the challenge of analyzing the NHL fan base. We sought to identify what attracts fans and to generate concepts that capitalize on those insights. The amazing experience I had working with this team and the calibre of the work we produced together made this project an extraordinary success and a standout ID memory.
